KISSIMMEE — Walter Clayton Jr. led three scorers in double figures with 19 points and center Ruben Chinyelu added 14 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, lifting No. 16 Florida basketball to an 85-51 win over Wichita State in the finals of the ESPN Events Invitational at the Milk House.
The Florida Gators (8-0) went on a 16-0 run to close the first half to take a 37-18 halftime lead, then scored the first 11 points of the second half, going up 48-18 on a 3-pointer by sophomore forward Alex Condon.
The 6-foot-10 Chinyelu, a transfer from Washington State, added four blocks and four assists for a dominant afternoon inside. Condon added 17 points and 9 rebounds for UF.
Clayton went 7 of 16 from the floor and 5 of 9 from 3-point range. As a team, Florida went 14 of 33 from beyond the arc.
Clayton Jr. was named MVP of the ESPN Events Invitational, averaging 20.0 points in UF wins against Wake Forest and Wichita State during the tournament.
Defensively, Florida was again on point, holding Wichita State to 18.8% shooting in the first half and 29.8% shooting for the game.
With the win, Florida is off to its best start since starting the 2009-10 season 8-0.
